WW1 AIRCRAFT MISSION TO SOMME – 11/11/11

Thruster / DH2 photoshoot

Watch ITV Calendar News and Central News this evening to see the highlights of a WW1 aircraft’s trip to the Somme. Primetime Media’s cameras travelled with the aviators from Lincolnshire who flew a PP replica watch Airco DH.2 to the Somme to over fly the Thiepval Memorial on 11/11/11.

The footage captured is to be used in a DVD documenting the journey, due to be released early next year, and tonight’s news (21st November, 2011) will show some of the exclusive footage captured from the aircraft as they crossed the Channel and flew over the Somme. This is the first time in 93 years that this aircraft type has flown through French skies, and it was an emotional journey for the pilots and support crew.

Primetime Media have also taken aerial photographs for the team. The current edition of Pilot Magazine includes a Special Feature on the DH.2, with photographs taken by PM’s Joanna White. DH.2 pilot Stewart Smith requested an aerial photographic session back in May this year to provide a library of photographs for use in publicising the Somme trip and the aircraft in general. Aerobatic aircraft designer Philipp Steinbach flew Joanna in a Thruster microlight which cruises at a similar speed to this WW1 relic. The air-to-air session took us over some of Lincolnshire’s poppy fields – a fitting symbol of WW1 remembrance. These images have been used by Pilot Magazine, in an article which talks about the DH.2’s cross country expedition to the Somme, and the flight characteristics of the aircraft.

Primetime have travelled with the DH.2 to record its journey from Wickenby Airfield, through Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Kent before crossing the Channel and heading south approximately 65 miles to the airfield at Albert, NE of Amiens. The team set off on the 8th November with our minicameras on board the aircraft and with two of our cameramen filming the journey – one by air and one by road.

As well as video and photographic support, Primetime Media have been publicising this event through Facebook, Twitter and by creating and producing content for a Wickenby DH.2 blog. You can follow progress by visiting wickenbydh2.wordpress.com , on Twitter @wickenbydh2, or on the Facebook Page. Updates will be given continually during the trip.
