‘Scoop of the Year’ was awarded to Calendar News Producer Mark Witty and Simon White of Primetime Media for their series of features ‘In Search of Ben Needham’. The team were delighted to receive the award from Ben’s mother Kerry Needham.
Mark, along with Greek journalist Maria Kagkelidou, spent many months following up leads hoping to find Ben. As a result the Calendar team journeyed to Greece with Kerry and her father, following a tip off about a young gypsy man long believed to be Ben by Greek locals. Unfortunately a blood test proved that he was not Ben, but the hunt continues. Simon captured some excellent footage out there, including the heartbreaking scene as Kerry meets the potential ‘Ben’.
Fifteen other awards were presented celebrating the work of the regional press in their communities. The Hull Daily Mail was named Yorkshire and the Humber’s top daily newspaper at last night’s regional O2 Media Awards, and also won the award for Editorial Team of the Year and News Reporter of the Year.
Over 150 journalists attended the ceremony held last night, at the Northern Ballet Theatre in Leeds. If you would like to see all the results then visit the O2 Media Awards webpage.
